Description
Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol, UK. This bridge, over the Avon Gorge, was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completed in 1864. It spans a distance of 214 metres, and is 75 metres above the river below. Its total length is 412 metres. The towers are 26 metres tall, with the Clifton tower at left and the Leigh Woods tower at right. The Leigh Woods tower was built on top of a red sandstone abutment (34 metres tall). There are three independent wrought iron chains on each side of the bridge, from which the bridge deck is suspended by 81 vertical rods. Photographed in June 2013.
