Description
Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859). 1868 illustration of the British civil engineer and ship designer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Brunel is known as 'one of the most ingenious and prolific figures in engineering history' and is credited with changing the British landscape with his ground-breaking designs and ingenious constructions. In 1825, he helped his father to construct the first tunnel under the Thames in London, England. In 1830, his Clifton Suspension Bridge design won the competition for a new bridge over the Avon Gorge in Bristol. In 1833, he was appointed engineer of the Great Western Railway (GWR), designing railway track between London and south-west England. He also designed trans-Atlantic steam ships, including the Great Britain, which was the first propeller-driven ocean-going iron ship. Brunel was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1830.
