Description
Clifftop view of Porthtowan beach. Taken on coastal path to Chapel Porth west of St Agnes, Cornwall, SW England, UK. St Ives far to the SW can be seen in the distance. This area was heavily mined for copper, tin and other minerals particularly in Victorian times when technological advances allowed deeper mining. Remnants of old mine buildings and spoil heaps litter the area as poignant yet fascinating reminders of the industrial past. These iconic mines were immortalised in the popular Poldark novels. Important areas of large heathland has survived along the coast here. Ironically it was not turned into arable land because of soil contamination of previous mining activities. Few plants or species other than heathers and spiders can thrive in the area's environment.
