Description
It's hard to believe on a beautiful sunny day that this area on the north Cornwall coast near St Agnes used to be noisy, dirty and smelly.
Today it is peaceful, so pretty and the smell of gorse on this hot day was overwhelming. Much better than the arsenic that would have been the predominant scent in between 1815-1914 when Wheal Coates was a working tin and copper mine.
This attractive looking ruin was once the calciner furnace used to roast the tin ore and it is located downhill from the two engine houses of Towanroath. By heating the ore in air, the arsenic impurities could be driven off as a vapour.

great shot even better story. Sounds like the vapour might have been extremely harmful to the folks working there.

Such a contrast in times! Beautiful composition with the path leading the eye through to the path in the distance!
